About Cara's House
Ascension Parish Animal Shelter
Cara's House is the open intake shelter for Ascension parish. As a 501c3 non-profit shelter, we strive to provide the best care for the animals in our shelter while they wait for their forever homes.
Cara’s House (formerly Companion Animal Rescue of Ascension) was established in 2015 to address the concerns and needs of the animals in our parish. We take in nearly 3,000 animals each year and have improved the live-release rate from 22% (prior to takeover) to 90% (2020 numbers). Although Ascension parish government does supply some funding for our operations, we rely heavily on volunteers, donations, and fundraising to generate the funds needed to care for the animals in our facility.

Open Intake Animal Shelter
Cara’s House is the open intake animal shelter for Ascension Parish, Louisiana. We are not a rescue group. Because we are an open intake shelter, we cannot limit the number of animals that come into our care. We cannot turn away animals regardless of age, breed, etc. We can only intake animals from within our parish.
We are a 501c3 Non-Profit Shelter
Cara’s House provides testing, shots, medical treatment, microchipping, prevention, and spay/neuters for the animals in our care.
Donations from the public go a long way in helping us continue to provide this level of treatment.
Without your contributions of time and money, we would not be able to care for the approximately 3,000 animals a year that come through our doors.
